Leveraging its strong relationships with stakeholders as the leading advocate for business, the council helps drive debate and policy change in favor of sustainable development solutions.

The WBCSD North American office provides a resource base to contribute to global projects and interact with the U.S., Canada and Mexico offices of our member companies, assisting them in becoming more engaged in the work programs and initiatives of WBCSD. The North American office is intended to provide a platform to engage North American businesses, industry, policy, NGO and media audiences on how the WBCSD member companies are addressing global sustainability challenges. The WBCSD office also develops partnerships with other U.S., Canadian and Mexican organizations interested in sustainability to accelerate progress towards a green economy.

Roles & Responsibilities 

The WBCSD North American Manager represents WBCSD in the North American market to members, partners, and other key stakeholders, as well as the views of members within the WBCSD. The Manager is responsible for raising the profile of WBCSD in the North American market; supporting the implementation of WBCSD programs in the key markets of the United States, Canada and Mexico; engaging North American (NA) active members and other stakeholders in WBCSD initiatives and recruiting new members.

 Expected Activities

  • Program Delivery:
  • Representing the Food, Land and Water Cluster work programs and initiatives in North America and contribute towards the global project objectives. Take an active part in the global project team
    • Developing working knowledge and insights into the key components of the Food, Land and Water program around Food (WBCSD program called FReSH), Climate Smart Agriculture and Water
      • Potentially leading an aspect of these programs relevant for the NA audience
      • Recruiting members and prospects to participate in these work programs
      • Stage, support and convene workshops, dialogues, and other programs to increase opportunities for WBCSD members and prospects to engage with WBCSD and contribute to the development of the global project
    • Member Retention:
    • Ensure that current membership is and remains highly engaged
    • Keep NA active member companies engaged
    • Keep Geneva HQ informed about member engagement and concerns
    • Assist in implementing WBSCD projects and initiatives in the North American market and help to tailor the work to the NA audience with potential to oversee/manage an aspect of the working group
    • Assist with content for communication and events (e.g. newsletters, etc.)
    • Member Recruitment
    • Assist in recruiting activities to get new members of strategic interest to the WBCSD, including prospecting and participation/leadership of expert presentations and engagement sessions with North America-based companies
    • Contribute to key prospecting events planning (annual Liaison Delegate and Council meetings, invites and sponsorship; UN General Assembly/Climate Week and WBCSD North America events at Greenbiz etc.)
    • Represent WBCSD at relevant conferences and events in North America
    • Form and strengthen relationships with key organizations in North America that further WBCSD purpose and programs

Desired Experience and Skills

  • 5-7 years business of business/sustainability experience; access to a network of corporate decision-makers
  • Expertise/experience in one or more of the following areas: agriculture, food, land-use, farming, water efficiency/policy/programs and climate
  • Proven ability to build trusted relationships with senior level business and stakeholders
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills, both written and oral
  • Experienced in key account management / customer relations management and consultative selling
  • Passionate Self-starter – ability to take initiative and seize opportunities for WBCSD growth in the local NA markets where appropriate
  • Used to consulting work attitude: familiar with project-driven work-style (e.g. milestone planning)
  • Knowledge of Spanish a plus
  • Advanced skills in the use of database management
  • Advanced knowledge of major MS-Office tools (Excel, ppt, word)
