Deadline for application: 08 May 2023

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is the premier global, CEO-led community of over 200 of the world’s leading sustainable businesses working collectively to accelerate the system transformations needed for a net zero, nature-positive and more equitable future.

We share a vision of a world in which more than 9 billion people are able to live well, within planetary boundaries, by 2050. To achieve this vision, we must collectively accelerate the required transformation of businesses, their value chains, and the systems in which they operate to limit the impact of the climate crisis, restore nature and tackle inequality.

How our community works

Our community leads positive change through our imperative work by building the infrastructure of a better world through climate, nature and equity action. In our distinct pathways, we outline the critical transitions required in some of the significant areas of business activity to profoundly shift the systems we work in and transform them towards a better future. Together we succeed when our collective effort is rewarded through a lower cost of capital, which is the scope of our redefining value work; helping companies measure and manage risk, gain competitive advantage and seize new opportunities by understanding environmental, social and governance (ESG) information.

WBCSD’s contribution

WBCSD stimulates progress by ideating & level-setting new best practices and trends from different expertise & sectors. By improving performance, we enable standards and protocols supported by tools and technology to solidify businesses’ sustainability competence. We build partnerships by bringing together members and external partners to create coalitions and partnerships and build scale into change. Finally, we drive the policy agenda by amplifying the voice of positive business and shaping policies collaboratively to transform the systems we work in.

Our work aims to empower business leaders to raise their ambition to achieve a better world, deliver action at speed and scale in their operations and value chains, and sharpen the accountability of their performance.

Job Overview

With current efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions not on track to meet the targets of the Paris Agreement, external and internal pressures to accelerate decarbonization are intensifying for the business community, which is largely seen as responsible for pulling the dial into the necessary direction. As companies advance along their decarbonization journey, all will, however, face a common challenge: accurately understanding the Scope 3 GHG emissions that occur along their value chain and typically constitute the largest and most diverse share of a company’s footprint. Due to a lack of transparency across value chains, these emissions are also the hardest to quantify and tackle. Solving this Scope 3 emissions challenge presents one of the most powerful levers to accelerate decarbonization.

The Partnership for Carbon Transparency (PACT) seeks to address this challenge by standardizing the exchange of emissions data across value chains. Bringing together business stakeholders from across sectors, industry-focused initiatives, standard setting bodies, regulators and leading technology companies, the ultimate objective of the project is to set the right tracks for targeted decarbonisation action through collaboration on Scope 3 transparency.

More details on PACT and its mission can be found here.

With the foundations in place to standardize how emissions data is calculated and exchanged across value chains, we are now looking for an experienced individual to join our expanding team to support the implementation of PACT by leading on our carbon accounting work. This is a unique opportunity to become part of a truly ground-breaking project at the intersection of business, sustainability and technology, which has major impact potential.

Responsibilities and duties

  • Drive PACT day-to-day activities with a focus on GHG accounting, including
    • Further developing existing PACT methodologies for consistent calculation and exchange of Scope 3 data
    • Creating alignment between different sector initiatives on methodological questions
    • Collaborating closely with the GHG Protocol team on how to leverage synergies of the work PACT is doing into the Scope 3 standard update.
  • Support the development and implementation of the PACT scale-up strategy by
    • Collaborating with other team members to better understand the user journey for different stakeholders wanting to calculate, exchange or access data (i.e., large companies, mature suppliers, SMEs, consulting firms, assurance bodies, regulators, etc.)
    • Developing supporting materials to facilitate implementation of the most complex topics included within the user journey (e.g., data consolidation, biogenic emissions)
    • Holding regular feedback sessions with key stakeholders to define areas of priority and identify current roadblocks to implementation
    • Leading in the design, planning and execution of regular workshops, webinars and other in-person events to increase awareness of the work PACT is doing and leverage outside perspectives on GHG accounting
    • Supporting harmonization between carbon accounting and technology topics within PACT, to ensure a streamlined narrative that facilitates the onboarding of members and their suppliers.
  • Further elevate PACT’s internal and external positioning by
    • Engaging with and creating synergies with other project areas within WBCSD to ensure an aligned approach
    • Working with our communications team to prepare outreach materials, presentations and publications.

Qualifications Skills and Experience

We are looking for an experienced candidate with a strong interest in sustainability, who can demonstrate the following skills and capabilities:

  • Master’s degree (preferred) in sustainability, business or a related field with several years of full-time professional experience
  • Good grasp of the fundamental challenges of climate change, in particular in the context of business, and the evolving carbon accounting landscape
  • Demonstrated experience in GHG accounting (Greenhouse Gas Protocol standards, corporate GHG accounting and reporting, scope 3 accounting and life cycle assessment (LCA))
  • Capable of analysing and synthetizing complex topics, articulating challenges and determining priorities and solutions
  • Outcome-oriented mindset with evidence of mobilizing different stakeholders to find effective solutions for topics that are complex and ambiguous and driven by competing agendas
  • Ability to work both independently as well as part of a team, manage multiple tasks, and work under tight deadlines
  • Collaborative, people-centric and “can do” attitude with a strong team player ethos
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.

The position is full-time and based in Amsterdam, London or Geneva, but will also require some international travel with flexibility.
