Job overview

Apply strategic thinking, coupled with capacity for project management and implementation, to help position and profile WBCSD as the leading voice of business for systems transformation in global Climate and Energy circles.

Main duties and responsibilities

Strategic communications advisor

  • Provide strategic guidance on communication best practice by breaking down complex, technical information into accessible and engaging content for high-level business audiences.
  • Work with the Climate & Energy Director and the Communications Director to develop simple, compelling messages that are in line with Organization’s value proposition to member companies.
  • Will need to understand technical aspects of climate and energy projects, most notably related to energy, offsetting and climate policy.
  • Provide strategic guidance to staff for WBCSD and member communication engagement in the lead up to and during major climate change related events, working closely with the Climate Policy Manager in particular regarding preparations for the annual Conferences of the Parties under the UNFCCC.
  • Provide strategic guidance and external representation for WBCSD concerning our communications and corporate engagement activities with our partner organizations in the areas of climate and energy
  • As part of the Climate and Energy team, you will also research, identify, prepare and deliver opportunities for high-impact communication across events and through other platforms (op-eds, articles, video, social media, etc.) – occupying well-established spaces as well as positioning WBCSD leadership in new spaces.
  • Provide content support and strategic advice to the CEO and other SMT members for their public speaking opportunities.
  • Work in close collaboration with the communication team to ensure strategic alignment of messaging and activities.

Content development & editorial oversight

  • Develop and manage thoughtful communications pieces, campaigns and activities to build brand, enhance reputation and achieve business objectives.
  • Write content for WBCSD including material for articles, interviews, newsletters, blog pieces, member communications and social media.
  • Provide editorial leadership to WBCSD Climate and Energy team for reports and publications, and ensure all content adheres to the WBCSD’s visual identity and tone of voice, liaising with the Communications team and external agencies as necessary.
  • Research and develop content that will bring the organization into new untapped avenues for communication (social media, digital or print or any other relevant channel).

Positioning & media relations

  • Proactively grow WBCSD representation across influential media & other platforms.
  • Proactively develop media relationships and manage media enquiries and support the Climate & Energy team with media relations including writing/editing media releases and managing media campaigns.
  • Assist the Climate & Energy team with media enquiries and ensure all external communications adhere to pre-agreed guidelines.

Analysis, quality control, and traffic management

  • Track and analyze positioning of climate change and energy related trends in competitors as well as international media in view of continuously supporting the development of WBCSD’s value proposition on the communications front.
  • Quality control across in-house processes on product development in writing, video, social media, presentations, etc.
  • Liaise with the Communications team as necessary concerning with the financial management of communications projects, relationship with external suppliers, etc.

Relationship & team building

  • Manage expectations of demanding stakeholders in a fast-paced environment.
  • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders internally and externally.

Qualifications

  • Education level. Master’s university degree level education with a focus on sustainable development, environmental science, international relations, or political science. Other degrees will be accepted if candidate has experience of policy analysis/development experience.
  • Excellent writing skills and demonstrated capacity for managing communication projects.
  • Minimum five years’ relevant experience, with a preference for experience of working with the private sector.
  • Specific skills:
  • General knowledge of key climate change and energy related policy concepts and the international climate change process.
  • Research and analysis: Strong evidence of analyzing complex issues and presenting key insight. Focusing on the relevant and essential.
  • Personal characteristics.
  • Teamwork: Evidence of successfully working across teams and diverse interest groups, good team spirit and the ability to contribute to, and work effectively in teams of partners/stakeholders.
  • Project management: Capacity to work independently. Evidence of successfully managing competing priorities and ad hoc demands simultaneously, identify and proactively address problems, working to deadlines.
  • Communication: Perfect command of the English language, both written and spoken. Ability to write, think and speak clearly/concisely.
